The Telia Tree

Data sculpture
2020
Agency: TRY
Client: Telia
Overview

Located at Telia's headquarters in Oslo, the Telia Tree is reborn every 24 hours, shaped by the company's internal performance data. Every day bringing a new shape, from puny shrub to hulking giant. The tree lets both employees and visitors alike check the company's health at a glance, while also being a beautiful centerpiece and communicating Telia's visual profile.

My contribution

Design and creative technology. Along with another designer, we developed the concept and its visual expression. Furthermore I programmed the weather and temperature system that would respond to real-world weather data and reflect it in the installation, as well as the shader-driven organisms that crowd the tree.

Design

The tree responds to Telias internal data input to influence its height, width and fullness. Furthermore, the little organisms that swarm the tree respond to visitors passing by, thanks to a depth sensor mounted to the ceiling. The installation is also connected to a local weather station, which allows it to be influenced by temperature, wind and downpour, reflected as cracking ice, sweltering heat waves, rain and snow.

The main installation screen is 4 x 4 meters and is located at the entrance. Further into the office, a companion installation was made, where one could monitor the changes of the tree over time, as well as get additional info on the data that shaped them.
