Never Closer

Magic window

Agency: TRY
Client: Norwegian airlines
Overview

An enhanced adshel that tracks spectators' head positions and uses the positional data to give the illusion that they are looking straight into a holiday paradise.

My contribution

Generalist designer and creative director. I was responsible for the concept, the overall look and feel of the installation, and fine tuning and testing.

About

The installation is built in Unity and utilises a Kinect 2 to track pedestrians. Head positions are fed into an off-axis projection algorithm to give the illusion of a space behind the board. The installation may be administered from an iPad using OSC.

Visually, the installation alludes to the narrow streets of Barcelona's Old Town. To ensure a convincing visual representation, we decided not to trust Unity's sometimes sub-par graphics engine, and instead prebaked all lighting from Maya, thus not ruining the illusion with poor real-time lighting and reflections. Not using reflections also informed the design process of the scene, as it forced us to avoid reflective objects at all costs.

The window was installed in Nationaltheatret Station in Oslo.
